Challenge

The SH16 Causeway Upgrade project spans the 4km stretch between Te Atatu interchange and Great North Road Interchange. The construction team was challenged to maintain traffic flows for the 90,000+ vehicles through the congested SH16 corridor while widening in both directions and raising the motorway by 1.5m to accommodate the rise in sea levels.

Solution

Close integration between the design and construction teams was required to ensure constructability and successful delivery of the project. Temporary Traffic stages were fully MX modelled and the used of the BG 800 steel barrier systems was a first on such a large scale. 13km was deployed during the peak of construction period.

Results

The project was successfully completed in time and in line with the other SH16 projects to completed part of the western ring route. The use of long length steel barriers is more common due to the success of the causeway project.
