Challenge

Widening of the Southern Motorway in Auckland over time has pushed State Highway 1 extremely close to adjacent commercial properties in this very constrained corridor. Improved noise protection was called for and due to the already constrained corridor - construction was a challenge to ensure safe working room, and limited disruption on New Zealand's busiest road.

Solution

Through a series of night works, use of permanent guardrail, and access through rearward private properties -[ disruption on the main highway was drastically reduced. Through utilising slight lane modifications (through modified linemarking) - safe working room was achieved without reducing operating speed for motorists.

Results

The project finished on time and on budget. The linemarking and guardrail solutions employed on this project were tempaltes for future similar challenges.
